College Students Guide To Gadgets That Will Help You Stay In Contact With Family
College is such an important time in anyone’s life. Finally, you are free from your mom and dad telling you what to do. It’s been a long eighteen years and you’re going to make the most of it. When you start thinking about your new room you will have to decide what to take. There’s the usual stuff which normally includes a television and beer fridge, but you will also need things that will help you stay in contact with your family. I know you might be glad you’re heading out on your own, but you definitely want to stay in contact with them. Let’s look at the best gadgets to make it happen.
A tablet computer
I say tablet because you will already have a desktop or laptop and it would be nice if you had something to hold in your hands when lying on your bed. If you download the Skype app onto the iPad you can speak to anyone you like while relaxing. Just hold the tablet up to your face and you are ready to go. The best thing about Skype is that it’s free if the person on the other end is using a computer. Think of all the money you’ll save on mobile calls.
In-ear headphones
Students are some of the noisiest people you will meet. They grow up after college, but they sure do like to have the most fun possible while they’re there. That means your halls are going to be bouncing most nights. There will always be someone walking around and making a noise. You won’t be able to have a good conversation with anyone if you can’t even hear what they’re saying. The only way you can get around this is by using headphones. It should be a set of quality in-ear one’s that are a lot better for cancelling out noise.
Send mom a letter
If your mom knows how to use email you can send her all the emails you like. But sometimes she might like to sit down and read a physical letter. Email is great, but it definitely doesn’t compare with holding something in your hand. If you don’t want to send her a handwritten one there’s another way. You’ll find some online companies that will let you type something up. They then print it and send it to your mom. Now she can spend Sunday reading your letter and thinking about how much she misses you.
Let people know what you’re saying
We’ve already talked about how your fellow students will never give you a moments peace and quiet. You already know how to deal with the noise for yourself, but what about the person you’re speaking to? Just because you have headphones in doesn’t mean your mom will hear what you’re saying when people are running about outside your room. There’s a large distance between your mouth and the iPad microphone. If you buy a better quality of microphone the person on the other end of the line will understand you perfectly.
Sign up for Google Talk
You can add your family to Facebook and use their chat system, but not everyone is comfortable with that because they don’t want their mom to know what they get up to while they’re away. Sign up to a Gmail account if you don’t already have one and you can ask family to do the same. Whenever both of you are signed in you can send each other a quick message on Google Talk if you have any questions. It’s not something you’d want to do all the time, but it’s great for quick 2-minute conversations when you don’t want to get on Skype.
